Who has not dreamed of spending a holiday far away from civilisation: just a log cabin, a lake for fishing and nothing but nature? If that sounds appealing, then choosing Hideaway, a wilderness cabin on a secluded lake in the Swedish province of Dalarna, is the right decision. Here, where the vast landscapes of the far north begin, the cabin once served as remote accommodation for forestry workers and hunters. Now renovated to modern standards, Hideaway and its outbuildings remain the only property on this lake, whose three islands lie idyllically among the uninhabited forests between Venjan and Mora. The lake is populated mainly by pike and perch, which, with a little skill, can be caught from the rowing boat provided. A canoe and several kayaks are also available for exploring the adjoining lake system.

In late summer and autumn, the whole area is full of blueberries and lingonberries. Many porcini and orange birch boletes also grow almost everywhere at this time of year, as the locals dismiss them as reindeer food. Speaking of wildlife: with a little luck, you may spot elk near the cabin, while bears, wolves and lynx are seen much less frequently.

The cabin is near Venjan, a small, tranquil village with around 300 inhabitants, and is easily reached via a forest road. In winter, however, the journey is not quite so straightforward: for a fee, Göran and his snow-clearing vehicle must clear the final few kilometres for you. Venjan itself has Tempo, a small grocery shop, and a petrol station, so all essential errands can be taken care of there. For larger shopping trips, the best option is the town of Mora, around 35 kilometres away, which also has plenty to offer culturally.
